'The Summer Hikaru Died' Synopsis:

Yoshiki and Hikaru are two teenagers living in a small rural town in Japan. Despite having opposite personalities and very different interests, their friendship is deep and sincere. However, on a fateful winter day, Hikaru suffers a fatal injury while hiking alone in the mountains. Before dying, he is found by a mysterious supernatural entity that consumes him, assuming his physical form.

This new “Hikaru” possesses all the memories and emotions of the original, but Yoshiki quickly realizes that something is different, that he is, in fact, a distinct entity. Even so, Yoshiki is determined to remain by “Hikaru’s” side. However, “Hikaru’s” true alien nature, along with the threat of other supernatural beings and hunters of these creatures, puts this friendship in constant danger.
